Canadian health officials are monitoring 26 people across the country after potential exposure to the rare Andes hantavirus linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship 🦠🇨🇦
According to Canada’s chief public health officer, the individuals are considered “low risk,” and no one in Canada has shown symptoms at this time. Most of the monitored individuals were passengers who shared flights with infected travellers but were not believed to have had close contact ✈️🩺
Health officials say the Andes strain is extremely rare and is the only known type of hantavirus that can spread between humans in uncommon situations. Experts continue to stress that the overall risk to the public remains low 📉🌍
Nine people across Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia are currently isolating as a precaution because they were either on the cruise ship or had closer exposure to infected passengers 🏥⚠️
Public health authorities across Canada are continuing to monitor the situation carefully while reminding residents that hantavirus is not considered a pandemic threat under normal circumstances 🇨🇦🔬
