A high-ranking Toronto Police Service inspector, Michael Hayles, was arrested and charged with impaired driving after being found asleep at the wheel.

Officers discovered the 51-year-old inspector on Sunday, October 4, 2026, around 6:00 a.m. inside an unmarked, police-issued vehicle stopped near Laird Drive and Eglinton Avenue East in Leaside.

Hayles, who was off-duty at the time, is a 30-year veteran of the force and serves as the second-in-command for 55 Division.

Following his arrest, Hayles was hit with two criminal counts: impaired operation of a conveyance and operating a conveyance with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit of 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.

In line with Ontario’s Community Safety and Policing Act, he has been suspended with pay. Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw released a statement reinforcing that no member of the service, regardless of rank, is above the law.
